I just don't think you guys understand the joke. Its quite clever really, a snappy play on words. Working with the fact that the shortened version of relationships, 'ships', has an alternate meaning. He cashes in on this coincidence by making references to 'ships' as in the boats in the context of 'ships' as in character pairings.
