Is there a truly selfless act that transcends motivation or gain? It's a simple question, but a difficult one to answer.
Discuss and philosophize.

it's not unknown for people to accept certain death to do something necesary for the survival of others. An example was on the USS Forrestal during the big fire in the 1960s, where men stayed at their posts to shift ballast and counterflood even though they knew they would not survive doing so.

Selfless hmmm? I would say yes, but it's pretty hard to come by a person who's TRULY selfless. Because in primitive law humans gain for themselves. To overcome instinct for the good of another without even thinking of oneself is selfless. For example, saving a person from certain death. However, not one person in this world is FULLY selfless. I think all of you would agree with me if you have done at least one selfish act in the past. I have too. Scratch that. I've done a hundred. But humans are capable of of performing acts of selflessness, as for Tenkan.......I don't know.

Well I do little things, like opening a door for someone or giving up my seat to someone on trains/buses if they need it more.

Well, roughly two millennia ago, God became man and died for our sins ...
So I'd say yes.

I would say yes.
I am deeply touched when people open doors for me when I don't know them. I always say a very gracious, "Thank you."

No. Ok, there might be some, a few, you can count them with your fingers, but you won't notice them... Opening a door for someone else is NOT a selfless act, it's just...nearly a reflex, part of how you've been raised and your opening the door just to not have a bad conscience and to hope that the people you held the door open for think that you're a nice person. Same with...well, pretty much everything. You want others to think good of you and to keep your conscience quiet, perhaps to do yourself the favor to think "Wow, what I just did there was so selfless, I'm such a good human being".

Lol, Baroque = our German Dr. Phil ;D
But yeah, that's the reason why I open doors - 'cause it's 'cool' to open doors for people. If it was cool to slam it in their face, probably do that ^^

I read about a guy who drowned while saving the lives of complete strangers. That's a selfless act.

There is such a thing as a selfless act...it is juz not too obvious as people generally are getting too selfish nowadays. Can't really blame 'em...its a dog eat dog world out there.

Well, yes there have been countless acts throughout history that have shown this. And even in our daily lives, as Nabusan pointed out, we do selfless acts. And that's what blows the Darwinist idea known as 'the survival of the fittest' out of the water. Well, roughly two millennia ago, God became man and died for our sins ... So I'd say yes. There's no proof God exists. But I agree with the second part, there are truly selfless acts. Actually, there has been plenty of scientific evidence that have come out in recent years that proved God's existance and thrashed the theory of evolution.

Now that's interesting, haven't heard about that yet. But hey, it might take some time until we hear the news that god truly exists... ...and who's Dr. Phil?

I wouldn't count on it, the one thing that keeps athiesm upright is the theory of evolution. And if they allow that to collapse, well... Hmm the guy believes in God, but not an afterlife or religion. Does he have any scientific basis for rejecting evolution other than the fact that he finds it 'improbable'? *shrug*
