Yep, the cheerleader with the blue headband is the newcomer to the group. She wasn't in the group for the past three seasons, so she's new. I think I'm gonna like her...

Hmm Freshman new girl. (only way I can see it, I don't think she was with any other school in the one episode)

But, that's the senior cheerleaders! The varsity!
For some reason she reminds me of this one girl in a crowd scene in Mind Games.

could she be this girl in the lower right? But what is funny is at the end of the ep, at the cheer regionals, she is not there

Much as I think that would make sense, wallaceb, I pretty much ignored those few first episodes of Season 1 where they showed that unknown extra girl (I chalk it up to 'first time' experience of creating the characters, given it was the first season). All the episodes after "Mind Games" showed only 8 girls in the squad - Kim, Bonnie, Tara, Hope, Jessica, Liz, Marcella, and Crystal, so I take these 8 as the true members of the squad given they were the only ones shown throughout the seasons. Now as for whether the Season 4 squad is a variesty team. I don't think so, given that ninth girl appearance. She wasn't in any of the past episodes, and I chalk up the new uniforms as just a change in vareity (one can't expect uniforms to stay the same forever). There is only *one* MHS cheer squad. Besides, thinking about it, when Kim and the other 7 original members of the squad graduate, the newcomer will be squad captain and form a whole new team. She will able to take her experience as a member of Kim's team in order to organize the new one. Oh, another logical explanation for the newcomer's appearance is that she moved to Middleton and would take her final high school year here.

Something else also struck me. Kim's cheer squad seemed to do all the school's cheering. Now, since they were previously not Varsity, the real Varsity team would normally do a lot of the cheering. But we have never even heard of any other cheer group.
Either there was no other cheer group but Kim's or Middleton's Varsity team just did very little.

Either there was no other cheer group but Kim's or Middleton's Varsity team just did very little. Pretty much the former. In "Attack of the Killer Bebes", it was Kim's squad performing at the basketball game. It was Kim's squad who went to cheer competition in "Return to Wannaweep". If MHS had a Varsity team, they would have been the one sent to the cheer competitions, cheer at the basketballs games, etc. So yep, there's no doubt about it for me now. There is only *one* MHS cheer squad.

Hmmm, if memory serves, we've only actually seen the JV squad cheer at basketball games. At the football field, they were just practicing where Brick could see them. Now they're Varsity and they're seemingly cheering for just the football team.
Personally, I think they've always played it fast and loose about the JV/V squad thing, up to the point where Bonnie mentions they're now "Senior" cheerleaders, who get a different uniform.
This would also explain why none of the old squad apparently graduated (something I couldn't tell for sure until MD&A)
I wonder if they had to create a new girl because of the number their new formation required?

I think Bonnie wasn't talking literally when she said 'Senior cheerleaders'. I think she meant they were *Seniors* who are cheerleaders. Again, I believe the new uniforms doesn't show they are varisty cheerleaders but simply they are new uniforms all together. Besides, just because they didn't show the squad cheerleading for the footballs games in the past seasons doesn't mean they didn't.

hmmm, At my high school there are JV and Varsity Cheerleaders, but from what I know they both cheer at home games and in competition, never been to an away so I don't know if only Varsity goes or not. I'm not entirely sure but I think you're JV until you hit senior year the you're automatically Varsity, the new girl probably tried out but is on Varsity because she's a senior.
