Battlestar Galactica's Tricia Helfer gets animated this Saturday in a guest role on The CW 'toon The Spectacular Spider-Man (airing at 10 am/ET). In the episode "Persona", Helfer provides the voice of the villainous vixen Black Cat, who Spider-Man must team-up with to stop Chameleon, a master thief who has been pinning his crimes on the web-slinger. In addition to crime-fighting, expect lots of flirtation between Black Cat and Spidey.

In Studio Interview with Matt Wayne, writer of this week's episdoe PersonaBlack is the new red this weekend when an alien symbiote causes a metamorphosis of Spider-Man's suit in "Persona," an all-new episode of "The Spectacular Spider-Man" premiering this Saturday, May 17 at 10:00 a.m. ET/PT on Kids' WB! on The CW.
In the episode, Spider-Man learns the hard way not to judge a book by its cover when another Spider-Man starts making headlines … as a crook! It's the Chameleon, master of disguise, looting the city and laying the blame at Spidey's feet. The Web-Slinger is forced to team up with another crook, the lovely Black Cat, to stop his foe's faux-Spidey crime spree and clear his name. Along the way, Spider-Man inadvertently comes in contact with an alien symbiote that dramatically alters our hero's color scheme … and begins to mess with his mind.
Battlestar Galactica's Tricia Helfer guest stars as the voice of Black Cat. Dan Fausett directed the episode from a script by Matt Wayne.
Wayne said he enjoyed the task of packing so many plotlines into a single, 22-minute episode.
"It was a good challenge, and I think the show got tighter as we went along," Wayne said. "As a writer, you have to love the pace of this show – it's very freeing for a writer to have every scene be something coming to a crisis. There's very little laying pipe at this point of the season. It's just going from climax to climax."
Wayne penned two other episodes during the series' first season – "Natural Selection," which featured Lizard; and the subplot-packed "The Invisible Hand," which introduced Rhino, revealed Tombstone, and gave the first glimpse of Mary Jane Watson. Wayne also wrote one episode for the second season before shifting to another project. He said it was especially entertaining to write the back-and-forth banter between Black Cat and Spider-Man for "Persona."
"Black Cat is definitely flirting with him – she doesn't know that he's only 15 – so she considers him a man, she assumes he's available, she's going for it, and he's reacting like a 15-year-old," Wayne said, noting Peter's potentially-romantic interaction thus far this season with Mary Jane Watson, Gwen Stacy and Liz Allan. "Considering what Peter Parker has been through the whole season, I think it's great we can throw another girl on the fire and have him react this way. It's really capturing what it feels like to be a 15-year-old boy."

The Venom/Symbiote arc kicks off this Saturday. As a Spidey fan I will say this I have always found Venom to be on whole.....average. I like his desgin but never like the man that bonded with the alien symbiote. I found S-M3 version to be pretty good, making him Peter's doppleganger. 90's TAS did a pretty good job on developing Eddie hatred for Spider-Man and Peter before he got symbiote and the Ultimate Version is well done also in having Eddie having a personal connection with Peter. In Ultimate Peter and Eddie are cousins and their fathers work on a suit to cure cancer called the Venom Project. In all versions though Eddie has always been a jerk. But Greg Weisman and Victor Cook have taken Eddie Brock and made him a likeable character giving him a friendship with Peter that is a symbol of brotherhood. Eddie is like the big brother that Peter never had, but their is strain on the friendship now...this show has finally made me like Eddie Brock, the man underneath the alien costume.

Yeah, the show airs on Saturday mornings, I have to set my alarm for it so I don't miss it. Thankfully I don't work on Saturdays. Can't wait for the DVD releases as Greg Weisman said the episodes will be extended when they are splice together as mini movies of self contain story arcs. The Venom arc is the last arc of the first season and I have to say the first season is a strong one, hope they can top it with the second season.

The Uncertainty Principle10/10 A great episode, and Harry is reveal to be the Goblin. I find that to be all too obvious. Last episode we saw Norman giving off that evil grin and in this episode him coming out of a secret area in his own home. I expected Harry under the mask(even though I wanted it to be Norman) but I feel Norman is pulling strings here. Await season 2 to continue the Goblin mystery. Nothing is obvious on this show at all. Overall it was a great episode and handled very well and yes next episode kick starts the symbiote/Venom storyline. I was sort of let down by the Green Goblin reveal, mostly because this episode centers on who the Goblin is and it felt too straight forward. Now time and perspective might give me a different view on this depending on future episodes (especially involving Norman). But for now this along with Reaction are the weakest episodes so far this season. But the action in this episode was off the hook. I'm guessing the action here came from storyboard artist (and KP alumni) Adam Van Wyk. His storyboarding always provides great action especially the best fights this show has ever had (the Lizard, Rhino). Not bad for a guy who's hometown is in West Des Moines, IA. ;D

Not bad for a guy who's hometown is in West Des Moines, IA. ;D That's why I think it's truly Norman that is the Goblin as Harry being the one unmask was anti-climatic due to the foreshadowling in the previous episodes. It has been theorized that the "Norman" at Oscorp when the GG breaks in was The Chameleon. I agree on 'Reaction" being the weakest episode in the season but the Goblin/Spidey fight propell in "The Uncertainty Principle" above it, fantastic episode. Don't accept the reveal of the Goblin's indentity at face value just yet. Cadmus, since your a very hard critic I would like to hear your views on the show itself and your personal opinion on the individual episodes. Have you listen to Spider-Man Crawlspace Podcast with Greg Weisman and Josh Keaton?

Persona
Rating: 8.5/10
This episode marks the beginning of the Venom arc, it also seems that Peter has been forgiven by Eddie for the previous incident from the 3rd episode. Peter wants to get a view of the alien symbiote but Eddie says no bypass due to Martha Conners. Peter as Spidey heads to the lab to find a thief, Black Cat looking to steal the alien. During this time while Spidey and Black Cat have their little banter the symbiote bond with Spidey. Spidey is blame for the theft of the alien symbiote and we find out the Chameleon was hoping to pull the job of aquiring the alien. No funds for Chameleon and his associates, Quentin Beck and Phineas Mason whom both later become Mysterio and The Tinkerer. Overall the episode sets the seeds in motion for the rest of arc.

New Images, Ratings, Episode Schedule For "The Spectacular Spider-Man" [/i] May 29, 2008 by James Harvey The CW4Kids has provided Marvel Animation Age with new images from this weekend's episode of The Spectacular Spider-Man, and further information on ratings and upcoming episodes for the series. Press Release: Just three original episodes remain for the first season of The Spectacular Spider-Man starting this Saturday, May 31 with the blockbuster gathering of The Sinister Six in an all-new episode entitled, "Group Therapy."Ratings for the series have continued to build over its first 10 episodes as The Spectacular Spider-Man has been posting tremendous numbers -- particularly over the past four weeks, oftentimes doubling the competition in virtually all key demographics during both the 10am original episode time slot, and the 9:30am repeat slot. Due to the Memorial Day holiday, Nielsen ratings for this past Saturday's repeat episodes have been delayed. However, for the May 17 original episode, The Spectacular Spider-Man scored remarkable numbers in all Saturday morning broadcast network kids demographics, including the key categories of Kids 2-11 (1.8/8, topping it's nearest timeslot competition of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fast Forward's 0.9/4), Boys 2-11 (2.7/11 to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fast Forward's 1.4/5), Kids 6-11 (1.6/8 to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fast Forward's 0.9/4) and Boys 6-11 (2.3/10 toTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fast Forward's 1.4/6). For the week, the original 10am episode ranked No. 2 for the entire morning slate in broadcast network kids ratings for the Kids 2-11 demographic to the established Tom and Jerry Tales, and the 9:30 a.m. repeat The Spectacular Spider-Man episode placed fourth overall. Despite premiering in March, nearly seven months into the season, original episodes of The Spectacular Spider-Man already rank No. 1 in its 10am timeslot for Saturday morning broadcast network ratings in the key Kids 2-11 demographic, and No. 3 against all Saturday morning broadcast network competition (behind CW 4Kids' reigning season champs and runners-up Tom and Jerry Tales and Shaggy & Scooby-Doo Get a Clue!). Riding those strong original episode ratings, the 9:30 a.m. repeat airings of The Spectacular Spider-Man, which only began six weeks ago, have already rocketed to the top spot among all Saturday morning broadcast competition in the Kids 2-11 demographic. The remainder of the schedule for first season original episodes of The Spectacular Spider-Man on CW4Kids: Saturday, May 31st 9:30am – "Competition" (repeat featuring Sandman) 10:00am – "Group Therapy" (premiere) Saturday, June 7th 9:30am - "The Uncertainty Principle" (repeat featuring Green Goblin, Hammerhead & Tombstone) 10:00am - "Intervention" (premiere) Saturday, June 14th 9:30am - "Persona" (repeat featuring Black Cat, Chameleon & Spider-Man's symbiote-enhanced black suit) 10:00am - "Nature vs. Nurture" (premiere, season finale)

"Group Therapy"Rating: 9/10 'Group Therapy' manages to build upon more on the natue of the symbiote. Here it resembles more of the classic black suit from the comic books than it did in the last episode where it first look like the movie counterpart. Nice job on incooperating the two familiar designs. The episode deals with the Sinsiter Six. The majority of villains introduce this season make up this verison of the supervillain faction: Doc Ock, Electro, Vulture, Sandman, Rhino, and Shocker. The villains mange to force our hero to retreat. During this account Aunt May suffers a heart attack, a plot point on May's health continued from the last episode. We learn more of Eddie Brock and the fact he has major issues that have yet to boil to the surface but they begin to rear their ugly head during a joyride with Mary Jane. The result of his recklessness has MJ leaving him telling him Peter, inspite of his faults is more of a man he will ever be. Now brings us to the second fight between Spidey and the Six. A fantastic fight it is with Spidey whom appears to be quiet throughout the battle manages to take down the Six through calculated measures. Upon waking up Peter feels drain and more bruise before to find on the front page of the Bugle, that Spidey takes down the Six and the pics were taken by 'Peter Parker'. Peter learns that the alien is a symbiote and it has taken his body out for a joy ride and on top of that Mary Jane informs Peter that Aun May is in the hospital due to a heart attack. Exclusive First Look: Spectacular Spider-Man's VenomAfter weeks of teasing, Venom finally makes his appearance on The CW's The Spectacular Spider-Man this Saturday, and we've got your exclusive first look. The alien menace, a popular Spidey villain from the comics and last year's Spider-Man 3, bonded to Peter Parker two episodes ago. On this week's episode, "Intervention" (airing June 7 at 10 am/ET) Peter fights back, forcing the symbiote to look for a new host — paging Pete's pal Eddie Brock! — and take on the form of the slithery, fanged Venom. The episode, the second to last of Season 1, was written by the series' supervising producer, Greg Weisman, and directed by David Bullock, who helmed the recent DVD movie Justice League: The New Frontier. — Rich Sands The CW4Kids has provided Marvel Animation Age with a new image from this weekend's episode of The Spectacular Spider-Man as well as a detailed episode synopsis. From ToonZone.comPress Release: With apologies to Walt Kelly, The Spectacular Spider-Man has met the enemy and not only is he wearing his costume, he might just be our hero. Such is the theme of "Intervention," an all-new episode of The Spectacular Spider-Man premiering this Saturday, June 7 at 10:00am ET/PT on CW4Kids. In "Intervention," Peter Parker finally gains enough self-awareness to realize the alien symbiote hasn't simply bonded with his Spider-Man costume, it's taken over his life! But when he tries to remove it, the symbiote fights back. Is it a war Pete can win? The all-new episode, the 12th in the series' first 13-episode season, is directed by David Bullock (Justice League: The New Frontier) from a script written by "The Spectacular Spider-Man" supervising producer Greg Weisman. Prior to the premiere of "Intervention," CW4Kids will air a repeat of "The Uncertainty Principle" at 9:30 a.m. ET/PT featuring Green Goblin, Hammerhead and Tombstone. The CW4Kids has provided Marvel Animation Age with a closer look at Spider-Man's Black Suit in The Spectacular Spider-Man. Press Release: For those watching closely over the past two episodes, the symbiote-induced black suit worn by The Spectacular Spider-Man has already undergone some evolutionary changes – and there are more coming in " Intervention," an all-new episode of The Spectacular Spider-Man premiering this Saturday, June 7 at 10:00 a.m. ET/PT on CW4Kids. The black suit, the result of an alien symbiote attaching itself to Peter Parker/Spider-Man, first appeared in the episode entitled "Persona." For that episode, the suit fairly replicated Spider-Man's red/blue suit into a black version with its classic web pattern, along with a spider emblem on his back in black with a white outline. In the next episode, "Group Therapy," the chest emblem increased in size and changed slightly in shape – much like the comics black spider shape. In addition, the emblem on his back had a slight change in shape and was now all-white, and the classic Spider-Man suit web pattern began coming apart with the webs starting to unravel. In "Intervention," the black suit has fully evolved into the comics version of the black Spider-Man costume. Producer/Supervising Director Victor Cook explained the reason for the evolution of the black suit from episode to episode. "The symbiote's control over Peter isn't sudden, it progresses – and we wanted to show that aspect visually as well by having the black suit progress from classic web pattern to non webs," Cook said. "As the web unravels, so does Peter's control. Also, it was fun to for us to homage both the movie and comics versions of the black Spidey suit."

Intervention
Rating: 10/10
Intervention begins with Peter swinging to his aunt's side, May suffer a heart attack last episode, to be greeted by Eddie Brock. Brock shows his disdain for Peter but says he is there for May Parker. The alien costume now looks like it's comic book counterpart symbolizing the control the symbiote has over Peter now. May is doing well but advise by doctors to keep an eye on herself. Peter is loaded with a large hospital bill to pay. Peter ignores the help and concern from his friends, funny they are all his love interest: Mary Jane, Gwen Stacy and Liz Allen. As Spidey, Pete accepts the job offer that Tombtsone put on the table. Meanwhile we learn that Eddie has lost his job at ESU lab due to funding being cut off with the alien missing, Eddie can't be kept on the payroll and can't afford to continue his education. Eddie blames Peter for his troubles. Flash Thompson actually meets up with Peter(I like that Peter calls Flash by his real name, Eugene) at the hospital to tell his a** off that he doesn't feel sorry for him due to still acting like an elitist jerk even to his friends who want to help. Peter reevalutes his situation after Flash actually makes sense, realizing the symbiote is changing him he tries to rid himself of the alien. The Symbiote reacts creating a concone to permanantly bond with Peter. The is the best part..the symbiote tries to use Peter's origin against him. Yes, the classic origin is told, a mixture of the comic book and movie origins. In the process Uncle Ben acts as Peter's conscience. Touching moments that bring out the emotions that were done so great this fresh year season for Greg & Co. Peter manages to defeat the symbiote not before it finds a brand new host....
This Saturday's episode is the season finale! Spider-Man vs Venom.

Keaton On "The Spectacular Spider-Man" Season Finale, Schedule Update June 13, 2008 by James Harvey The CW4Kids has provided Marvel Animation Age with a press release and new images from this weekend's season finale to The Spectacular Spider-Man. Press Release: School's almost out ... the seasons continue to change ... the Lakers are toast ... yes, all good things do come to an end -- but it's nice to know they'll all be back AND better than ever. Well, we hope the Lakers will improve. But "better than ever" is definitely the case for The Spectacular Spider-Man, which ends its first season with an all-new, action-packed episode entitled "Nature vs. Nurture" this Saturday, June 14 at 10:00am (ET/PT) on CW4Kids. Coincidentally, The Spectacular Spider-Man voice cast recorded its final episode of the series' second season on Thursday, June 12 -- culminating another 13-episode arc that promises more familiar characters, unprecedented action and shocking twists than viewers can begin to imagine (though message board participants have certainly outdone themselves in their speculation). Even the cast -- which includes self-professed comic book geeks like Josh Keaton (Peter Parker/Spider-Man), James Arnold Taylor (Harry Osborne), Steve Blum (Green Goblin, Chameleon) -- admitted they were caught off-guard when reading the script prior to entering the recording booth. "This show has actually gotten me watching Saturday morning cartoons again," Keaton said. "I'm in front of the TV with my bowl of cereal every Saturday morning and, even though I'm about 13 episodes ahead of everyone else – I already know what's going to happen – I still love waking up and watching because it's so much fun to see how it all comes together. And if you liked the first season, well I'll say this: You may think you know what happened in the first season, but the second season is going to change all that. Prepare to be surprised." "Nature vs. Nurture" opens on Thanksgiving as Aunt May Parker is released from the hospital, but Venom has no intention of letting May and Peter Parker enjoy a family celebration. Knowing all of Spider-Man's secrets – even some Pete isn't consciously aware of – Venom threatens to destroy Pete and everyone he loves most. Will Pete embrace his destiny in time to defeat this new arch-nemesis? "Nature vs. Nurture" is written by Kevin Hopps and directed by series producer/supervising director Victor Cook. Prior to the premiere of "Nature vs. Nurture," CW4Kids will air a repeat of "Persona" at 9:30am. ET/PT. The Spectacular Spider-Man was the top-rated broadcast network series last Saturday, June 7, continuing to build on its already significant ratings (according to Nielsen). Those ratings have grown with the premiere of each original episode this season, easily trumping the competition -- which is now taking the if-you-can't-beat-'em approach. As further testament to the series' drawing power, the 9:30 a.m. The Spectacular Spider-Man encore presentation was the second-most watched show among broadcast network series last week. Starting next Saturday, June 21, CW4Kids will make some changes to its lineup -- although The Spectacular Spider-Man will remain unchanged, airing each Saturday morning at 9:30 & 10:00am. Moreover, CW4Kids will air the entire 13-episode first season in order -- two episodes at a time, and running for seven consecutive weeks. Joining the lineup are three highly-rated series from another network: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fast Forward, Chaotic and Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, and triumphantly returning to the CW4Kids lineup is the five-time Emmy Award winning series The Batman. For June and July, the CW4Kids schedule will air each Saturday as follows (ET/PT): 7:00am -- Will & Dewitt 7:30am -- Magi-Nation 8:00am -- Tom and Jerry Tales 8:30am -- Tom and Jerry Tales 9:00am -- Chaotic 9:30am -- The Spectacular Spider-Man 10:00am -- The Spectacular Spider-Man 10:30am -- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Fast Forward 11:00am -- Yu-Gi-Oh! GX 11:30am -- The Batman From Marvel Animation Age

Nature vs Nurture Rating: 10/10
A solid episode and a good season finale. Spidey breaks off his deal with Tombstone(which he made under the symbiote's influence) afterwards Venom takes the job offer to off Spider-Man. It's Thanksgiving and Aunt May is alomost ready to go home from the hospital. Peter thanks Flash for the reality check, can't wait to see Peter and Flash become friends as they did in the books. Trivia: Flash Thompson was Peter's best man for Pete/MJ wedding in the comic books. MJ warns Peter of Eddie and his changing behavior after going out of a date with him during "Group Therapy". Venom plays mind games with Spidey during their battle even sending May a get well card and flowers sign 'Guess Who?' Venom decides to leave Aunt May alone and go after the one Peter 'loves the most'. Peter thinks it's MJ. But it's Gwen who Venom captures and dangles her off a parade balloon. With a Little help from Flash, MJ, and the rest of the Midtown crew manages to save Gwen. Peter offers the symbiote to take him back, yes Peter tricks the symbiote to leave Eddie to defeat him. Leaving the symbiote in a concrete grave. Aunt May returns home and seems like she will start a relationship with her doctor and Gwen finally lets it be known to Peter she likes him with a full on kiss. Peter drains the gene cleanser from the Lizard episode deciding that SPider-Man is not a curse.
Now a long wait for Season 2 begins and for the eventually Season 1 DVD releases.

I could have done without the gaga on top finish. No I'm not talking about the Peter/Gwen kiss, I actually dug that. I'm talking about the part where the symbiote goes inside Peter's head and can't take Peter over "because of the power of loved ones". Yes I know it was a homage to the comics, but it was done alot better last week, here it was just treading over the same point. Spidey tricking the symbiote to release Eddie then capturing it would've been more than enough IMO.
This episode honestly felt more like Spider Man/Peter Parker vs. The symbiote round 2, with Eddie Brock just along for the ride. The fact that we never see Eddie Brock in another scene after the symbiote leaves him only further proves this point.
This episode should have been more about Spider-Man/Peter Parker vs. Venom/Eddie Brock, his bro, his life long friend ever since both their parents died. But the more interesting story takes a back seat to the symbiote's story. The action sequences while good looking don't do anything to enhance the emotion behind this fight, the emotion that we should've got.
Example: When Peter realizes that Eddie has bonded with the symbiote it barely fazes him mentally. He realizes it, but there's hardly any oommpphh behind it. Considering all the things that Peter has supposedly gone through with Eddie Brock since childhood, this was just lacking IMO.
The fact that Eddie has all this knowledge about Peter Parker/Spider-Man, yet all he does is try to hurt him on a physical level, instead of on a social one makes it feel even more lacking. There's more than one way to hurt someone than just by physical violence. Even Eddie Brock in the 90's cartoon did more to try and damage Spidey's reputation, than Eddie did in this cartoon. Of course this has been a problem with all the iterations of Venom: Any damage he tries to do to Peter/Spider-Man pales in comparison to the damage of what other rogues have done.
Anyways this was an above average episode, but there's still so much more they could've done here, with Eddie Brock as the center of the story. Instead the symbiote vs. Parker side drowns out the potential emotion behind Eddie Brock vs. Peter Parker side.
Oh and line of the episode goes to Tombstone, "I really should start locking those windows." ;D If there's one villain I look forward to seeing next season, it's him.
9/10
