I've been away all day today because I've been working on this, a coloring and shading of an old masterpiece by Jao: This really marks my debut as a serious (?) KP artist. I finally broke down and bought Photoshop CS last week, but I had no idea how to work it. So I turned to Jao and she taught me via IM how to do coloring and shading today. For some reason, out of all her drawings she selected this one, and sent me the uncolored sketch. She then walked me through the coloring and shading of Kim's face and taught me how to use photoshop layers. After that I did the rest on my own. It's still not quite finished--I still need to do some touch-up work on Ron and color in Kim's belt. And Kim's hair looks sort of plastic, but I'm working on it!

You showed the uncolored version to me and that just made me happy. That is one of my favorite all time Jao pics. Where is Jao, by the way? I miss her.

You're well on your way there FaZhou! Jao was my mentor also! That was EXACTLY how she taught me how to use Photoshop during my early days

FaZhou is my mentor in writing. And his mentor in art is Jao. Levelord's mentor was Jao. Dude, I'm gonna do six degrees of seperation now. LOL!

Thanks for the kudos, all! I still have a lot to learn. For example, the characters are supposed to be "backlit," but my highlighting doesn't really follow where the light is supposed to fall. I'm going to do some lighting practice with my "hokey-pokey people" this week. There are a lot of similarities between this drawing and Ivymae's "Passion," which I don't think was colored, and I'm going to ask her if I might do a colored version. I left the bottom of Ron's face light, though, because that's where the action is. Or is gonna be in a couple of seconds. ;D I compared mine with Jao's original colored pic, and she has waaaaaaay better grasp at anatomy and where shadows should fall on faces, arms, etc. It's...well, it's an art. I agree, Jao was one of the best fans ever, and her main email is still here at RS.net. She just lost interest in the show around a year ago. Maybe a commish offer or two could change her mind?

I love how Kim is taller than Ron in that picture.

Well, not taller but higher. Notice Kim's belly is much higher than Ron's, too.
That's Jao's genius--Kim is the "dominant" figure here, she's the one taking the initiative and taking action, while Ron is the passive figure about to receive her kiss. His almost-terrified expression underscores his passivity.

In the movie "Amadeus," Salieri looked over Mozart's manuscripts and saw that Mozart wrote everything out in final copy. In other words, Mozart was such a genius he didn't have to go back and make corrections, he composed everything perfectly the first time he put something on paper.
Well, I just now took out THE original ink drawing to this pic (Jao gave it to me last year as part of a package full of commished drawings). You could see she inked over her original pencil sketch. Thing is, there's no sign of any extra pencil lines that were erased--the lines you see here are exactly how Jao drew them the very first time.
OMG.
(LOL, for some unknown reason there's a cookie recipe in pencil on the back of Jao's original paper. I should try to make it sometime.)
