Has anyone ever written, even in passing, an explanation of why Steve Barkin has blonde hair in the very earliest episodes?
He doesn't strike me as the bleaching type, but what say you?

Well... No. I never bothered with such trival details in my fics. Barkin was a blonde is few first episodes, but when he was shown mostly with brown hair, I kept him with that hair color in my fics. It's the same silly trival stuff that I found odd like why Nana didn't met Ron until "Golden Years" if he had spent many Christmases with the Possibles. I had mentioned it in a fic as a momentarily bewildered thought for Kim.

That certain thought never really bothered me. I have gotten into a fierce debate over it with my mother...

He dyed his hair. Why? Blonde isn't manly enough in his book.

And here's something that doesn't sound like Barkin:
Steve Barkin: Peace, man.

I tried on the theory that the season ones with blond Barken were 9th grade, and the others 10th, but this didn't quite work. Officially, it's classed as an animation error. Barkin works just as well for me with either hair color, but if I was gonna write about this, I'd have him bleached in 9th grade, perhaps an accident when he was substitute teaching a chemistry class, a lab experiment involving peroxide. It's dangerous to discuss the details when Barkin might be listening.

I was just curious whether anyone had tried a humor piece where Barkin had a girlfriend who talked him into it or something to that effect.

Of course, this still caused a gigantic tear in the continuity, so in ENT the episodes Affliction and Divergence where created to explain it away: Genetic Engineering gone horribly awry (what a shock). Now... Could it be possible that Barkin's changing hair color is a result of Genetic Experiments conducted on him by the army...?
