Naw, a drabble is just what kind of comes falling out on the page. Some writers restrict themselves to one hundred words.... but then again maybe I'm wrong. XD

My understanding is that drabbles are less than a thousand words. Some say a thousand words and up is considered one-shot.

Meh, I'm not too sure, but that's what I've heard.

Well, I looked up 'drabble'. It seems it's supposed to be exactly a 100 words, which is what I did. Of course, not everybody follows this as a rule, and we don't really have to. I just thought it was a good challenge.

Alyssa, if you were just kidding about me having to write the whole 50, then I could do more. If not...well, 50 seems a bit much. I should probably concentrate on my other fics.

To tell the truth, I was unsure if I should even be writing any in the first place. It felt a bit rude, maybe, like I was hijacking your thread. I'm sorry.

DRABBLE:

A drabble is an extremely short work of fiction exactly one hundred words in length, although the term is often misused to indicate a short story of less than 1000 words. The purpose of the drabble is brevity and to test the author's ability to express interesting and meaningful ideas in an extremely confined space. Richard N. Hill recently coined the phrase "dribble" to describe a story that is only 50 words.[citation needed] Michael Kent of The Next Big Writer used "droubble" for a double drabble, a story in exactly 200 words. More information and correct definitions are found at Save the Drabble.In drabble contests participants are given a theme and a certain amount of time to write. Drabble contests, and drabbles in general, are popular in science fiction fandoms and in fan fiction. The concept is said to have originated in UK science fiction fandom in the 1980s; the 100-word format was established by the Birmingham University SF Society and popularized online at 100 Words.

The particular language used may greatly affect the ease or difficulty of writing a drabble. For example, the Finnish two-word sentence "Heittäytyisinköhän seikkailuun?" translates English as "What if I should throw myself into an adventure?", a sentence of nine words. This density of meaning makes Finnish a much easier language in which to write a drabble than English. Even easier languages would be those which exhibit extreme polysynthesis, such as Cherokee, where an entire English sentence can often be expressed in a single word.

The term comes from Monty Python's 1971 Big Red Book. In this book, "Drabble" was a word game where the first participant to write a novel wins. In order to make the game possible in the real world, the science fiction fandom agreed that 100 words will suffice.

"Drabble" is also sometimes used colloquially to refer to any short piece of literature, usually fan fiction, where brevity is its outstanding feature. Some stories, called "drabbles" by their authors or readers, total as many as 1,000 words in length. However, such a story might more accurately be termed "flashfic", "shortfic," or "ficlet".

Similar concepts are flash fiction, microfiction and nanofiction.

097. Writer‘s Choice: Mutual.

These dead time periods after a failed scheme always made them sullen and introspective.

They were not only re-evaluating their recent failures, but their entire lives.

A sidekick and a screwball scientist…being regularly defeated by two snotty teens and a creepy pet.

How did she end up there?

Making matters worse, she’d fallen in love with the screwball scientist.

And he didn’t know.

I hate my life, she thought.

“I hate my life,” he muttered.

She grinned; soon, she was laughing without knowing why.

He stared at her.

Chuckling, she leaned into him.

Eventually, he put his arm around her.




Hmmm...I think I liked this drabble better when it was more than a hundred words, maybe.

Ack...mushy. Yeah, I was afraid it was a little mushy.

LOL, only a D/S shipper would find 'I hate my life' mushy.

Gah, you know, when I was writing it, it kinda left a bad taste in my mouth. Are D/S really so dysfunctional that they're not allowed to be like this? Because that's kind of what it feels like and that's why it felt kinda wrong.

And yet...we have seen glimpses of something like this on the show...hmm....

Nah. The occasional mushiness is welcome!

It's when people overdo it that it stops being readable, IMO. I see them as 75% bickering, 20% agreeing, 5% mushy.

(It could be I found it mushy because I'm a D/S shipper, or because I'm 100% weird.)
