It goes without saying that as an anime, Pokemon is one of the most popular having gone over 500 episodes and with no end in site.
But what if I told you that the series before catching on, was actually suppose to end on the Indigo Season? Even more so, Mewtwo Strikes Back was going to close the series, according to an early trailer for the movie:

Trailer needs subs.
It's easy to believe that Mewtwo Strikes Back could have been the finale. Back then there were 151 Pokémon. Mewtwo and Mew being the last and most powerful, it makes sense that they'd be save for the grand finale. But then the anime became a runaway success and they kept it to make money off of and advertise for the games.
Now they have 493(!) including Arceus(Fudgin' GOD), and the movie starring it was just released in Japanese theaters this past July with yet another movie in development and no plans to cancel the series anytime soon.

Personally I thought that could have had it both ways. If I was calling the shots, I would have went with the original game plan and end the series on Kanto, with the Mewtwo Strikes Back finishing the story. Then I would do later seasons with the game appropriate cast (much like the Super Sentai Shows which spawned Power Rangers). The Johto Season under my watch would center around Kenta, Marina and Jun'ichi from the Raikou: The Legend of Thunder special. The Hoenn and Battle Frontier Season would still have May and Max, but have Brendan in place of Ash and maybe someone else in place of Brock. You could still even have Ash showing up as one of the top trainers in the world that any new main characters would come across. To new viewers he would be this cool, mysterious trainer, while to an longtime viewer, it would be clear who he is.

True, but that would remove Pikachu, and Pikachu is their breakout character.

True, but that would remove Pikachu, and Pikachu is their breakout character. They could always see to it that one of the regulars will have a Pikachu.

True, but that would remove Pikachu, and Pikachu is their breakout character. They could always see to it that one of the regulars will have a Pikachu. But it wouldn't be the same Ground-type fryin,' horn-aimin,' thunder-armor wearin' Pikapal as before.

I still watch Pokemon LOL. But maybe it would have been cool to have Ash journey to end after the first film, than continue it with new main characters. But kids are now so used to seeing Ash and Pikachu and love them that they'll never get rid of them, not till the series ends. They'll keep replacing the girl though LOL. I want that dang penguin gone, so in the end while I like Dawns character I hate the bird so I can't wait for her to go. I hope they don't shove the next girl generations Pokemon down our throwts like they did with Pipulp, stupid annoying bird >>

Yeah, I'm pretty sure getting rid of Ash would incite the same kind of fan backlash that killing Optimus Prime in the first Transformers cartoon did.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure getting rid of Ash would incite the same kind of fan backlash that killing Optimus Prime in the first Transformers cartoon did. At this point, definitely. but back before the Johto Season who knows? I wouldn't rule it out as plenty of unevolved Pokemon tend to be given some toughness (such as Ash's Charmander frying a Golem back in Season 1, and Golem's not only a fully evolved Pokemon, it is made up of two types which make it superior to a Fire Type). And as I said earlier, Ash and his Pokemon could still make reoccuring appearances encountering the trainer of the season. Given that he would be older and more experienced, it would make for some hype worthy appearances.
