Please stand up, please stand up.
I held off till the final aired to post this and now that it is over, all that I can say is what have they done to Mr. Barkin? In season 1 – 3 he was an honorable man, yes he was tough with the students but fair, I always felt that he was someone you could turn to if you have a problem (we all knew a teacher like that in HS). In some episodes when the going got tough Mr. Barkin was there right I the thick of it, i.e. bonding,
Now in the fourth season is now a sniveling coward, just watch “mentor of our discontent” and now above all else in the final episode he got dress down by Nana; oh the humility. All that I can ask is why, there was nothing that I saw up to the change that would have made him turn into this, does anyone have an explanation?
The only thing that I can think of is that to make Ron look more manly they almost reversed roles Ron the cool or somewhat calmer one and Barkin the ‘OMG Kim what are we going to do” guy. I am a S. Barkin fan and For me the final was a disappointment because of this, I did not expect him to save the world but to at least go commando with the Pixie girls,
Did anyone catch the reference to “I dated the most popular girl in HS and saved the world a time or two” when he had a talk with Ron? Anyone have thoughts on this?
Sorry for my rant but had to get it off my chest.

As THE Barkin fangirl, I actually didn't mind. But now that you mention it, they sort of did change his character. But I thought he was funny. There is another thread on PTSD, and that might explain a lot.
During the finale, I just wanted to comfort him.

Barkin should of stood up and kicked Lorwardian arse! No, he was trying to give Ron the opportunity. It was all a ruse. That is what I have decided.

Why didn’t he call in the P.G.C.S. team (Pixie Girl Commando Squad) and Kick serious butt. Stand aside boy, me and the girls will take it from here.

As a Barkin fan myself I was disapointed in him in the finale as well. I didn't like how Barkin kept putting down Ron and making him fear the future, that was just sad. I wanted the Barkin from ES back and give Ron advice about what to do not to make Ron feel bad.

You are all missing the single factor that explains it all.
The Tweebs.
Yes, Barkin is strong, yes, he did well over the years of school.
But for the entire last year of school...he has been dealing... the Tweebs.
Obviously, the finale was us seeing the last crumbling of a once proud man in the face of the horror that is Kim's twin brothers.

Check out my thread for Barkin and PTSD. I thought that Barkin's reaction to the alien invasion was a freak-out related to his war experiences. When I saw him rocking and crying in the gym, I felt as though he was totally reliving a past horrific experience. I always suspected that he suffers from flashbacks, and I think that was happening to Barkin. I also think that if Barkin needed to play an actual role, he would have been able to pull himself together and act admirably. However, I believe that part of his reaction was due to feeling utterly helpless and unable to change the situation.

I hope that is not true, I would see him as someone who would rise in a moment of deviousness and turmoil not collapse.

Giving it some thought, I thought it would be funny (and in-character) to see Mr. Barkin barking orders (no pun intended), trying to organize the senior class (and anyone else who's attending) into an ad hoc military unit in order to mount a counteroffensive, and the seniors not knowing what the heck Barkin is doing...

Mabye Felix saying "Well, if Kim can fight enemies like this, why not us?"
