While eagerly waiting for the new Clone Wars series to start airing here I realized I wanted to write a short oneshot. It takes place not long after the battle of Hypori, and a little while before Grievous takes command of the Malevolance. Anyway:
Dai groaned as he opened his eyes. His head was thumping and he felt disoriented. His captors were pulling him down a large, well light corridor. They were holding him up by his arms, letting his feet drag behind them. All he could see was the obsidian floor, and, in the corner of each eye, the metallic feet of the droids carrying his weight. Raising his head as much as he could in his weakened state. He was greeted by the sight of a command link booster pack. His gaze moved even further up the back of the soulless automaton. The top of it’s head was marked in yellow. A commander droid.
He struggled to escape but both of his arms were locked in a vice-like grip.
“Where are you taking me?” Dai demanded, giving up trying to free himself.
The super battle droids restraining him remained silent as they followed their leader. More battle droids followed behind. Dai could hear them marching in perfect synchronization. A dozen at least. Suddenly they stopped. They’d arrived at a large door guarded by more droids.
“Move aside, Lieutenant,” the commander uttered in his synthetic voice. “ The general wants to interrogate the prisoner himself.”
“Roger roger,” a second battle droid responded, stepping out of the group‘s way.
The mechanical doors slid open and Dai and his escort passed through. The young Kel Dor realized they were now in some sort of control room. It was well lighted and filled with battle droids. Most of them were covered in blue markings, distinguishing them as pilot droids. Dai concluded that he was on the bridge of the ship he had tried to infiltrate along with a small group of commando clones.
All the pilot droids’ attentions were going into processing the information that were shown to them on bright holo-screens, making sure the ship ran smoothly. The rest of the battle droids had red markings. Ship security, obviously there to guard the high ranking officers. The captain of the ship, and the…
“General.” The commander stepped aside as he spoke, leaving Dai’s field of vision. “I have brought you the prisoner, as ordered.”
The massive, cloaked figure in front of Dai turned, revealing his mechanical head on top of hunched shoulders. Then he spoke, his voice guttural and sharp. “ What were you hoping to achieve by boarding my ship, Jedi? Destroying me?”
“Grievous…”
“All but a few of your men are dead. And those very dead will soon be found.”
Dai groaned. He silently cursed himself for not having done a better job of deflecting the destroyer droids‘ heavy blasters. For not having prevented the explosion that was caused when one of the droideka hit a fuel cell.
“You will be brought to justice for Hypori.”
The cyborg general gave a hoarse laugh. “HAHAHAHAHAH! The forces of the Republic must be spread thin to send someone as young and inexperienced. Good.” His reptilian eyes focused on Dai again. “You already tried killing me once.” He hissed, motioning at his own mechanical body.
“General,” One of the pilot droids reported. “We’ve located the remaining clone commandos.”
“Excellent,” Grievous replied, reaching underneath his cloak. Dai watched as he pulled out a lightsaber hilt. Master Barrek’s lightsaber.
“You monster!” The Kel Dor barked.
Grievous slowly approached Dai, the metallic claws that were his feet clanking against the floor. The general towered above the battered young Jedi.
“I am no more than what you Jedi filth have made me.”
General Grievous reached down and grabbed Dai by his throat, lifting him up on to his feet by it. The lightsaber in his other hand lit up, giving off its characteristic humming sound. Both leaders looked into each other’s eyes for a second, neither one of them saying another word. Then Grievous drove the hot blade of light into his adversary’s chest.
As Dai’s lifeless body fell to the floor the cyborg general placed the now inactive lightsaber back in one of the inside pockets of his cape, along with the rest of his trophies. Then he turned to the door, striding out as he gave orders to the pilot droid who had reported to him only moments earlier.
“Take the bridge, Captain. I will take care of the remaining clones myself.”
