A.K.A. - The Heartless Tin man
They were at Middleton park and the three of them came running down the hill as fast as their feet would take them; all trying to grab at and put the last of the fireflies that still floated through the air into their jars before the fireworks were to start. Earlier that day their parents had scored a prime spot at the edge of the lake for their picnic and to watch the show from later that night. At that picnic they had during the day; Jim, Tim and Joss ate their full and promptly began to try and out belch each other much to the chagrin of Kim who had to stop Ron when he tried to join the fun and sing with the chorus. Mrs. Possible yelled at them to all stop it while Mr. Possible talked about acting your age and that we’re outside in view of the public all the while Slim who was Joss’s pa was slapping his knee and a hooting and a hollering and kept saying things like; “that’s my girl” and “ma would be so proud.”
Tim scanned the great lawn with sharp eyes and zeroed in on a brightly lit firefly and tried to make a run for it but Jim and joss noticed and went after it too, they all made a dash for it, but as Jim got to it he found for some reason that he slowed down and blocked his brother letting Joss slip past him and catching it. Tim yelled “no fair” and cursed a bit but Jim didn’t hear him, he found for some reason he couldn’t take his eyes off of her. He watched as she screwed the lid back on the jar after catching her prize, she brought the jar close to her face. Jim saw the glowing fireflies light up her smiling face as he had never seen it before, he saw the reflection from the tiny lights dancing in her eyes. She held out the jar for the two of them to see that she had more than they did, giving the jar a gentle shake; the flies grew brighter and Joss began to giggle then laugh out loud. To Jim though he had heard her laugh before he found that this time for some reason the sound of her laughter rang like music to his ears, it reminded him of the wind chimes his mother had put by the kitchen window.
Jim stood there mesmerized and could not stop staring at her, Joss took her eyes from the jar to look up at Jim and noticed him staring and said to him in a self-conscious voice “what?” Jim couldn’t speak and they looked into each others eyes for a moment and he saw a confused look overtake her, he couldn’t help himself or stop it but he began to lean in close to her. JIM! He clean near jumped out of his skin when he heard his mother yell his name, thinking he’d been seen for what he was about to do till he then heard her yell out for Tim also. The three of them looked over to where the voice had come from and then they heard Slim calling for Joss to hurry up and get herself and her cousins over here before the fireworky show started. Tim began to run as Jim and Joss lingered for a moment and again looked at each other again, before he could say a word to her she took off running back to where the family was gathered with him following closely behind.
Joss and Jim made it back to the blanket just in time to hear Ron snickering to Tim “you snooze you lose ya twerp, I staked out this prime viewing spot for Kim and me so it’s to the back of the blanket for ya.” Jim watched as Tim and Ron started arguing back and forth till our mother stood up and told the two of them to stop it and for Tim to sit next to her, he huffed over to her with the parting words to Ron that he’ll get even and maybe later when they all got home he’ll start reading to Kim some very interesting text messages sent to Japan from Ron that he has. Jim scanned for a spot to sit till he heard uncle Slim call out to him and Joss to sit by him and Nana, he patted the empty spot on the blanket inviting them to sit. As they sat; Slim said “what have the two of you been up too; you all plumb near missed the start of the show,” Jim’s face went beat red and even in the darkness he was sure all could see it. Jim plopped himself down at the back of the blanket next to his uncle and behind his father, he felt electricity course through his body from the spot on his arm that she brushed against as she slid down his side to take the spot next to him. Jim wanted to shout with joy but he dare not breath nor move fear that she’d move even a hairs breath away.
Jim’s thoughts flew at a hundred miles per hour, OUR SHOULDERS ARE TOUCHING! Her are is so warm, she feels soft, does she like me? Does she feel the way I do? Oh GOD; what if she doesn’t like me? I’ll tell her how I feel, no she’ll hate me, I have to do it; yes I’ll do it now; right now, yes yes do it now. He couldn’t, she shifted her shoulder and moved her legs till her left foot was now touching his right. Her every move he thought sent fireworks through him, he had to do something; anything, he had to know if she felt the same way. Jim ever so easily moved his hand like he was shifting his weight. He dropped his hand next to hers and made their pinkies touch and then ever so tried to sound cool and ask if she was looking forward to the show, yep was all she said back to him. He left his hand there with their pinkies touching and not moving it away from hers as the music for the show started to play. The sounds of the music came as if all around them but he didn’t care, he thought Joss was getting bored or cold cause she shivering slightly and kept shifting and stretching her legs pushing them up against his leg ever so little making him flinch with excitement and groan softly, he hoped no one could hear.
The show was moments from starting and the noise from the gathered crowd began to grow with excitement and pleasure except for Jim who was in torture sitting so close to Joss that all he could feel was the blood coursing through his veins and hear the sound of his heart thumping wanting to burst out his chest. He was trembling and felt as if he had to do something anything so he took a chance, he nonchalantly picked up his hand for a second or two then put it back down but this time he let his pinky and ring finger cover hers. Joss didn’t move her hand like he’d thought she would or shout anything at him but he thought he heard her make a “eep” noise but was not sure, he took a deep breath and moved his hand now to cover hers. He was scared at first Jim felt her begin to move her hand away but to his joy she didn’t pull it out from under his but to turn hers palm up and clasped his hand.
They held hands now and Jim gave her a gentle squeeze which she returned, they took their eyes from the lake and turned to each other and both noticed the reflection of tiny bright lights in the others eyes. Joss and Jim barely heard Nana when she said “look the fireworks are starting,” they took theirs eyes away from each other and looked up as Joss now rested her head on Jim’s shoulder and they both said "Yes, they've started."
END?
