It was dark; and they were standing on the roof of their house facing each other, Jim slowly put his hands around Joss’s waist and pulled on her belt. She looked at Jim with worry on her face and said, “Jim, I’m not sure us about doing this anymore.”
“Come on Joss, be a sport. I promise that this will be fun for you too”
“I know, but I’m worried, what if we get caught?”
“Are you scared?”
“No, I ain’t scared; it’s not that, what if Uncle Jim finds out? He’ll tell my pa, and my pa; he’ll whip me right good.”
“My parents are down the block having dinner at Aunt Joan’s house.”
What if Kim finds out, she’ll be shooting mad at what we’re a-doing?”
“She wont, now come here”
Jim tugged on Joss’s belt pulling her in closer to him, so close that he caught a whiff of her scented hair and that made him take a deep breath, making him think that she smelled of cinnamon. “Ewwwwwwwwww, what am I thinking,” were Jim’s thoughts as he then pushed Joss off the roof, and smiled as he watched her fall.
Joss could swear she heard giggling from above while she felt the rush of air past her face and the sound of the wind whistling in her ears as she fell. She listened to her own thoughts of why did she ever go up and the roof with Jim, and how did he talk her into doing this. Even though she knew what to expect next and “OOF-FA” still escaped her lips as the rope that was tied around her waist and attached to her belt went taught, stopping her fall. She now found herself swaying gently back and forth outside of Kim’s bedroom window.
Joss raised her right hand to her ear and pressed the talk button on the headset she was wearing and said, “con-fondit Jim, next time give a lady some warning before ya push her off a roof.” she then added, “if I didn’t think I’d get caught by Kim, I’d climb back up this rope and tan your hide”
“Promises, promises.” Jim said but quickly added to get Joss’s mind off of what he did and back on the target, “Tell me, do you see Kim?”
“She’s still there. Tim didn’t get her out of the room yet?”
“Don’t worry, he’ll be there in a few minuets. Tell me what is she doing?”
“She’s at her dressing table, brushing her hair and looks like she’s getting ready for bed. Jim, this can’t be right, it’s nine thirty on a Friday night, why ain’t she out on a date with her Beau?”
“He dropped her off already, Ron’s not much up to date on dating, to him a movie and a Burrito at Bueno Nacho is a big date.”
“Poor Kim. Poor us. How’s Tim gonna get her out of the room if that tenderfoot Ron don’t know how to properly court a lady?”
“Don’t be going soft on me Joss, remember that Kim’s the enemy. Get ready, it’s almost zero hour”
Joss looked at her watch as she heard Jim start to countdown from twenty seconds, she again looked through the bedroom window not knowing what to expect for Tim to do. She wanted to know but was told that Tim works on his feet and sometimes not even sure himself what he’ll do till the last minuet. As the countdown got closer to zero I saw something by the door, it was just wisps of smoke at first, then it grew thicker. I called Jim to abort the mission and was about to rap on the window to warn Kim that the house was on fire when I heard Tim yell.
“Fire!!”
Tim called out fire again and banged on Kim’s door, Kim took notice of the smoke now and ran for the door. As she opened it; she said she’d call mom and dad at cousin larry's and for Tim to grab the fire extinguisher but stopped as she saw that Tim was smoking a big cigar and was blowing the smoke under the door. Tim stood up and smiled impishly, and said while still clutching the cigar between his teeth, “fire extinguisher, I don’t need no stinking fire extinguisher, I got you fire extinguisher right here,” and promptly splashed Kim in the face with a cup of water he was carrying and then took off running down the hallway towards the steps. He was laughing like a maniac with Kim no more than two steps behind him, cursing him that she was about to have only one brother after she catches up with him. The last thing Joss could hear from the fading ruckus was Tim yelling, “how can you be chasing me, I’d thought you’d be melting by now from the water you witch.”
“The room is clear,” she said into the mike of her headset.
“We won’t have much time, get in and recover the item”
Joss reach out for the bedroom window and slid it open, then she called for some slack on the rope, then pulled herself into Kim’s room. She walked across the bedroom floor as Jim kept feeding her more and more rope so she’d have room to maneuver, she could hear him through the speaker of the headset telling her to head towards the right side of Kim’s bed. There it was, it was now in reach and she called Jim to tell him she saw it on the night stand under a crudely sewn together cuddle-buddy.
“No!” Jim screamed so loudly through the headset that made Joss jump a foot off the ground.
“Tar-nations Jim, you calling the hogs to slop or something? You didn’t have ta scream so loud, I almost got it.”
“No Joss, that’s a decoy that Kim puts out for us, its booby-trapped, so don’t touch it.”
“I don’t have time to look for it, I gotta leave; Kim’s gonna be back soon”
“No, don’t worry, I know were she hides it.”
She listened to Jim telling her to look behind the night stand and run her hand along the wall, there she’ll find a hidden panel and to push in on it. Joss did as she was told and, “golly” the panel slid open and there inside was a red colored book with purddy flowers drawn on it. She told Jim that she saw it and he told her to grab it and he’d start to pull her back up. Joss reached in and was about to grab it as she thought to herself, “this is so easy,” as her hand touched it another thought crossed her mind and a this time it was, “yeah, this was so easy, too easy.” She took her hand from out of the crevice and closed the panel as Jim asked her if she got it.
“No Jim, I don’t have it”
“What? Why not, was it not there?”
“No Jim, a book was there but that was not it”
“What do you mean?”
“Trust me, I’m a girl and that’s not it”
“You, you’re a girl?? Since when?”
She knew that Jim was joking, but for some reason what he said bothered Joss something fierce. She wanted to tell him that she’s a girl again and to make sure he knew it, but she remembered why she was here and she knew that time was short. Joss stood up straight and scanned the room, giving it the once-over and kept saying to herself, “show me where you are.”
Joss new it as soon as she saw it, it would be the same place she’d keep hers it if ever did something so darn girly as keeping her own diary. Grabbing the rope that snaked out from behind her that led out the window, she called up to Jim to give her more slack so she could move deeper into the room. Keeping one hand on the rope; she walked on tip-toes to and knelt before Kim’s hope chest, she tripper the latches and lifted the top of the chest till the chains stopped it from falling all the way over, the top was lined with red felt and had pictures of boy bands, cut outs of hearts and teen idols.
She could see that inside the trunk were assorted lengths of colored ribbons, pins, photos of young boys (that she liked when she was younger,) some assorted picture of her and other boys, boys not Ron, like some of Josh Mankey and her at some shindig, a boy with braces that wore a big grin on his face standing with Kim outside of a dentist office. Joss began to dig deeper down into the trunk peering past and through Kim’s hopes and dreams, their were dried flowers that were wrapped in tissue paper, one of which only had a tag that had Bobby Jo H. written on it and the other was a red rose with a ribbon that said to my Blue Fox from your yellow trout, then there was the corsage from that Carpetbagger Eric, the one that the Syntodrone gave her for the junior prom.
She was now down to the bottom of Kim’s hope chest and still no diary, Jim began calling for me to hurry up and get out; that she was taking to long. Joss started to think to herself, “how could I be so wrong, I was sure it would be here,” then it hit her, the top of the chest look kinda thin. The cover to the chest was four inches thick, but from the inside it was only and inch deep, Joss ran my hand along the inner edge till she felt it, a tiny latch. she gave it a little wiggle and then heard the sound of a spring and a click, then felt board flipped downward on hinges. There they were, composition books, and a whole mess of them and she then thought, ”Kim’s been a busy writer I reckon.”
Joss grabbed several of the book and closed the panel and lowered the lid to the chest and made sure that it looked as she found it. Jim kept calling her to get a move on cause from his vantage point on the roof he could see that Kim has entered the house and was sure to head back up to her room. Joss listened for and now heard Kim’s footsteps coming up the stairs to the trapdoor of her room, Joss made a dash to the window telling Jim to pull in the slack of the rope, she just got out of her room and closed the window in time as Kim entered her bedroom and even though the window was closed Joss could hear what Kim was muttering, “he likes to play with fire, I’ll set the little scarecrow on fire.” Well and rest of what she said Joss thought, “with I being a lady could not repeat those words in good company .”
She was now back on the roof with Jim, Joss was clutching the books to her bosom and felt the thrill of excitement run through her as Jim got in real close to her and rested his chin on my shoulder as he put his hands around her to undo the rope that was tied around her belt. Joss coulda swore that his hands were trembling as he held her, she wasn’t sure if she was shaking from the excitement of what she just did and from the touch of Jim. We left the ropes and rigging on the roof for when we had to sneak back the books after we were done reading them and rushed off to our hiding spot to meet up with Tim.
