I personally quite like it, such as Puff Daddy's (or so he was called at the time) song I'll Be Missing You which used the music from Every Breath You Take by the police. was that the song where p diddy was like, "i love this song by sting so much! it's so romantic and passionate!" and sting was like, "...um... it's about how i criminally stalk a girl..."? because when that happened, i lolled.

Didn't BOTH Britney Spears and Kelly Osbourne steal one of Madonna's songs?
They aren't fit to even come near Madonna.
And I hate that whole stealing songs. I hated it with ATeens stealing ABBA songs. It was so wrong.

But you all have to make a difference between stealing and making an official licensed coverversion. What Vanilla Ice did, was stealing. What the ATeens did was making official licensed coverversions!

But, the way they sang it! Gawd, I'm embarrassed that I own an ATeens song.

Hmm...I remember that one rap song--I think it was by Tech N9ne--called "I'm a Playa." As a pretty hardcore Falco fan, I didn't take too kindly to that one. And yeah, I know "Rock Me Amadeus" is pretty ridiculous on its own, without being further degraded into a rap song, but still...show some respect, Herr Hoelzel had more talent than most of the idiots in the rap industry combined.

Oh I don't know.
As a fan of both the oldies and the new it doesn't really strike me as stealing. But rather kind of like a remix version of it.
The Sean Kingston "Beautiful girls" is very catchy thanks to the beat provided by the original "Stand by me". Think of it as the modern dance version of it.
Lack of creativity? Probably. Does it mean its bad? Nope.
I think of it as the hip hop artists own way of paying tribute. I'm pretty sure they grew up with those songs too.
Kanye West with his "stronger" is a remix done with Techno underground sensation Daft Punk's "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" and its not bad either.
Its like putting a new spin on old tunes. They're not really killing them. You can still listen to the originals, its not illegal.

When I was growing up, I listened to everything. R&B, Disco, Rock, Pop, Swing, Big Band, Oldies (40's, 50's, and 60's at the time), Show-tunes.... You name it, I've probably heard it. No one type of music is good, bad, or unoriginal. There are just good songs and bad songs as far as I'm concerned. Maybe that affects how I feel about sampling/covers in general. If sampling is done creatively, I don't mind it. If the older song used has some relevance to the new one, I don't mind that, either. I only really object when a song really stinks, like "Ice, Ice Baby". Those of us who remember the originals should do what you guys are doing... Keep telling people to seek out what actually made the new song so freaking catchy. Rap/Hip-Hop was the best thing to happen to older artists like James Brown and George Clinton. Sampling brought them a completely new audience. The same is happening now. As awful as some of the new songs you guys have mentioned are, they still expose a new generation of kids to great songs like "Stand By Me" and "Don't You Want Me". Most of the time, when a significantly older song is used in a new way, it brings attention and recognition to the older artist. SOS by Rihanna is a good example of that. There are kids who would probably never heard "Tainted Love" at all if not for that song. I hadn't heard Louchie Lou and Michie One's "Rich Girl" (a semi-cover of "If I Were a Rich Man" from "Fiddler on the Roof") in years until Gwen Stefan'i's "Rich Girl" was on the radio. And guys, cover songs are not stealing. Doing terrible cover songs should be a crime, though. Gah, I haaate "Missing You" so much. Sting pretty much legitimized the stupid song when he sang with Puff (P.Diddy, Puff Daddy, or whatever else Sean Combs is calling himself these days) at the MTV awards one year, so he must have approved of it. He even let Puff remix "Roxanne" and did new vocals for it. Go figure.
