You'll need a TV card, if you find one with the right inputs you will be able to not only record from a TV arial signal, but also take inputs from your DVD/tape player. The cost, I am unsure of in the US. My card was baught from www.hauppauge.com/

A HD card is about 100 USD, and a standard card is about 40 USD At least from my pricing

im not sure abt paytv/cable, but over here for me i just got a usb dongle for free-to-air digital TV with HD support, a compro U300. set me back AU$89, pinnacle offers a few too, but they are more picey yet better brand name etc etc...
i had mine for about 3 weeks and works great... you also need alot of hard disk space aswell as a semi-decent computer.... mainly 1.5Ghz CPU with 512MB RAM (minimum) with audio and decent video support (if using analogue tv signals) for digital tv u need even more space
btw wallaceb love ur new sig ;D
