Excellent job on all the coloring, Jao. Superb! Yes, that second Ron you posted definitely looks Japanese. But, it's cool. Someone must have noticed him when he went to Yamanouchi and totally copped his style.

How can you draw people so well? It may not be KP-style, but it's always nice to see some original styles, and a good one at that ;D I especially love your shading, too...right down to the pant wrinkles like unferthidol said Love the "Geek in the Pink" ;D

Lol, I saw it in her gallery last week - and thought of you, Baroque ;D Haha, that's really nice to hear. I have to say something. I don't feel really comfortable with it but...the last picture, the "Japanese Ron"...his nose. I can't say that I like it. I don't know exactly what it is but I think it is too big and you mixed perhaps two perspectives into this one nose so it looks...broken, in a really weird way. But I don't know that much about drawing, perspectives and whatnot...

I just like seeing different interpretations of Ron. It's like, seeing the foreign book covers of the Harry Potter books.

Ok guys =D I was thinking I'd do a step by step thing. I dunno. It might even be educational. <3 So. Here's STEP ONE: Thumbnail! =D It lets me know what shape my canvas needs to be, the persepctive I need, the mood of the pic, and things I might need to reserach to be able to draw it right. Now I'm gunna go look up refrence for explosions and burning buildings =D Here's the rough presketch. It's devided the pic up in three sections. The explosion, the building and background and then Kim and her speech bubble. it's set up the perspective and the composition. Now I can go in and redefine the lines according to what section. Here's the refined sketch for the building. I plan on keeping this lineless, so I'm not too worried about the quality of the lines. And since the taller middle building is the focus, that's the only one I'm really worried about defining. I'll do the surrounding buildings later. For the exploded parts, I imagnined something like an exploded pepsi can. All the windows would be broken and falling to the street below. And then I go and refine Kim's sketch. Where her clothes star end and fold, her belt and their loops, tiny stuff like that. When I draw people I draw their bodies first, just for the record. Then I add the clothes. That's why those lines are still there too. I hope to have Kim lineless as well, but if I have a hard time defining her clearly enough, I can add smooth final lines later. Now I'm ready to color =D

Haha, I have the same kind of initial doodle step. I'm glad I'm not the only person who does that(!)
Being an artist, I think people expect your rough doodles to be artistic too!

That is so cool...so neat to watch the progression I can't wait for the final product, it looks very climatic. I could never pull off special effects, but with your talent I'm sure that the explosions and stuff will look great! ;D

Sorry I've been so slack on this project. I have a few other things I had on my to-do list and to keep bored with any one project I tend to bunny hop from one to another. (unless there's a ridiculously short deadline. Then I'll sit infront of it for days. x.x ) So next step =D Research is goood. Specialy when you find helpful tutorials and good refrence. But there's a big diffrence between using refrence and copying. When you look at ref, it's good to try and figure out what makes it look like what you want. What's the diffrence between a big yellow blob and an explosion? How do the colors change? What's the true texture? How does it spread light? What tools in Photoshop can I use to get this effect? Stuff like that. That way you learn to do it forever, and not just for this project. You take what you learned and can use it over and over. I hope that makes sence. o.O Wee now it's gunna be almost like a Photoshop tutorial, but if you have paintshoppro, you might be able to use some of this stuff. =3 This is all I use. None of that color pallet stuff. Just layers and Navigator in the same thing. I rock the PS6.0, btw. So some of you with CS will be able to do this and more. Ok. I need to keep things organized, so I make a set (That cool folder button at the bottom of the layer pallete) and that's where I'll be keeping my BG stuff. For those of you who don't know, sets are magical magical things. If you're working with a lot of layers, you can put a bunch of related ones in a set and then close the set like you can close a folder in windows explorer, or expand it. Like thisThe Kim set is expanded, I can see her layers and deal with them. The BG is closed, but inside hte set is layers for the border, sky and grass behind her. If I move the Kim set, it'll move all those layers together as one. This is a godsend if you're dealing with a lot of characters in one pic and each has their own seaperate lines. You can move them thru the pic with all thier color layers as well. And also, you can drag a set from one picture to another and it moves all the layers inside as one. That's magic if you want to put a character onto a signiture or something and don't want to go thru the hassel of taking out hte blank BG of a jpg to put something new behind. When I found out about sets I was a very very happy jao. Ok so. Building's gunna be in it's own set, but for now, I'm gunna work on Kim, cuz she'll be more fun. And since she's gunna be lineless, I'm gunna start coloring her on that layer above the lines =D Yay!

Ee, sorry for the double post, but that last one was pretty long. Ok! =D This is how I pain hair now-a-days. Let's look at those color dots first. That's something like my color pallet. I grab a buncha colors I'll probably end up using. Why Blue? Cuz it's gunna be a night time pic, and there will probably be blue tinted secondary lighting from the street lights and buildings and such and it'll help contrast the warm bright colors from the light of the explosion. Those of you who know a little color theory, blue and orange are opposites and blending them will make some cool blue-ish browns anyways, which will help here. So, I put down the base color ( the dot with a dash on it) and then with a smaller paintbrush, on the same layer as the base, I slap on the other colors according to light source and the flow of her hair. I do it all on one layer since the point is to blend the colors. I start with the base and darks, blend them and hten add highlights and blend. Then, I start out with a medium spattery smudge brush and start blending the colors, working in stroked that agree with the flow of the hair. You'll be surprised the number of colors you get from blending just two or three. It's a little hard to describe. Blending with smudge is just something you have to practice. It's a lot like blending two colors in acrylic and with that splattery texture smudger you'll get something like a real paint texture. The trick is to just keep working it. As you do, think about what real hair would look like, how would it move, where would it go? It's important to check at diffrent views By that, I mean while you're working the colors close up, try zooming out now and hten and see if what you're doing looks the same. Work down the size of your smudger as you go and work the smaller strands. If the contrast isn't quite what you want, then don't sweat it too much, you can change that when you finish the hair. Wee updated shot. Still workin on it. here I keep blobing on colors as I need them and keep blending them in. You can start to see clumps and sections of hair.
