Wow... That's going to scar the fanfiction community.
She actually that a disclaimer was going to make it legal to publish and sell a fanfiction, it makes me sick.

I can understand not being familiar with the intricacies of copyright law, but she OBVIOUSLY does not know the meaning of the word, "commercial". Writers, NEVER be without your dictionary. (It's like a Hitchhiker touring the galaxy without his towel)

she's a journalism major with a minor in English - or the other way around, I'm not sure. I think copyright may have been covered at some point. it just keeps on boggling my mind... keeps on boggling...

Either way, it's still common sense to any serious fanfiction writer that you just cannot do that. The disclaimer she provided basically dug her own grave, she knew that it's illegal to sell a story based on copyrighted characters/locations/ect. but thinks that because "nobody knows about it" it's okay to do. *cracks whip*

I liked this bit: No, because I wrote this book for myself. This is a self-published story and is not a commercial book. Yes, it is for sale on Amazon, but only my family, friends and acquaintances know it’s there. Here's the site in case anyone is interested. Be sure to use the cache as her site is currently down. (Looks like the registar pulled back the domain actually)

Yes, it is for sale on Amazon, but only my family, friends and acquaintances know it’s there. I'd like to see how that would hold up in court. "Only my family and friends knew it was on Amazon!" Comeon now, that's the best defense someone can come up with for being completely ignorant by wanting to make money off someone else's frachise? Give me a break! *cracks whip, again...*

"Only my family and friends knew it was on Amazon!" "But how was I suppose to know the book was going to be on CNN?" I can't give you the name of it but we host a publisher that works with self publishers over here. First item on the FAQ? "No fanfiction!" heh heh heh

for those of you who want to keep atop this one: the thread from my writing board- absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31663it's also an EXCELLENT resource for all things writing - you may recognise some of the names there as published authors in a variety of genres! me, I'm enjoying the ride on this one... been a LONG time since I've seen someone *this* clueless.

Let us hope that it doesn't come down to this...
Since this came up, what do you guys/gals think? Can we actually be 'forced' to stop writing fanfictions if this has major repercussions in the end? There are a few people on the Absolute Write board saying that it won't really do anything to this hobby, but what if it does?
Back to bashing the dumb ficcer! *cracks whip* (arm's getting tired)
For someone at that age, you'd think there'd be some brain activity when thinking that "it's not a commercial publishing, so it's not illegal". If I were her laywer, I'd slap her and say that someone from the Lucasfilm organization did it. Then she might have a chance.

I don't think it's possible to stop people from writing fanfiction. I mean, if they were to try, they might lose fans and all that stuff. I mean, I owe my life to fanfiction, it helped me write better and understand myself.

Back to bashing the dumb ficcer! I had to laugh about the word "ficcer". (People who speak Nacospeak know why . Yes, I'm immature, so what!?)
