It´s a very tragedy story.

3000 Caroliner freez to death
"Late august 1718 a swedish army with about 10.000 men, infantry, horseman, under general Carl Gustaf Armfelt, Duved.
This crusader was an crutial link in Karl XII:s big plan to rule almost hole Europe. When they had conquer Trondheim they should been shipped over to Scottland
where the swedishfriendly clan Stuart was the king. Together whit the scottish Armfeldtmarch south ot ocupie England. Efter that they should create an allians with France and attack the Russian Bear under tsar Ivan. This looked like a modern Blitzkrieg. In 6 week this operation should be over. To get more mobilety the proviant and armor was cut down.Only 4 fieldcannons and 2 heavy cannons was taken for the storming of Trondheim. the enemy alliad General mud and rain plus myriads of mosquitos welcomed the Armfelt on the norwegian side. Bottomless quagmire, sometime freezy cold, storms and floadings slowed down the march. Undernourishment and sicknesscut big holes in the formation. Not until november, about 1 mounth later than planned the army was outside Tronheim. Despite 3 try to strom the city Armfeltdid not suceed to conquer it.
Throw a captured norweagian courier the massage that the king had been killed in action near Fredrikshald. Disappointed Armfeldt gave the ordet to retreat. Around christmas the discouraged and more and more thinned force Tydal near the swedish boarder. hundreds of men had died starvation or freezed to death every day. Uniforms bearly existed.
On new year 1718 they started the retreat on foot over the mountain. Up at the width the worst snowstorm ever rememberd attacked and rased nonstop for 5 days. 3.000 men died during that time. Those who survived succeed, mostly crowling in deep snow, reatch the village Handöl, in that time only had tree farms. Army surgeons waited. Barrols with frost-bitten, amputated lemmings was thrown over snowy fealds. Soldiers died like flies when they got under roof, in to warm houses. The dieing contiued during the march towards Storsjöbygden. First when the snow melted away next summer nearly 2.000 men was burried among the road Handöl - Järpen. Next to present Millesgården just west of Duved a monument was reised 1892 with the inscription "1719 års caroliner, af Fosterlandet".
experts count this the most tradigly campain as the worst ever with the biggest carsulty at the same time ever in swedish warhistory."

Not even WWII have something to compare to this tragedy.
