So I was listening to the radio... and apparently over in Conneticutt some lady was out with some kids in the wood when a rabid racoon bit one of the kids and would not let go. So the lady strangled it to death.
I just thought that was pretty freakin' cool.

I on the other hand find it sick and wrong... I mean rabid raccoons are something you don't usually encounter everyday...

Think about it, though. Usually you have to assume without proof that the animal is rabid and get shots you possibly don't need. Here they had the animal as proof. Rabies shots SUCK.
And she had to defend the kid!

Racoons are one of the animals that have rabies all the time. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabies#Rabies_in_the_United_States"Rabies was once rare in the United States outside the Southern states, but raccoons in the mid-Atlantic and northeast United States have been suffering from a rabies epidemic since the 1970s, which is now moving westwards into Ohio." Poor Racoons. Bats, racoons, squirrels... basically any wild animals can have it. That's why they give dogs rabies shot.

This is why when a possum got into my attic, my first thought was to reach for my .22.

Possums are just giant ugly rats with fangs and bad attitudes.

If I had a kid and some rabid racoon was latched onto them, I probably would've done the same thing!

I only saw one possum in my entire life. And my first reaction?
Run and scream with my younger cousin following me into our house to where my aunt (and his mum) was.
I recall that very vividly and can see my aunt with a big stomach (she was pregnant), so I can assume this was late '96 or early '97.

One time, I was sitting on a brick lamp post (which was lit) at the end of our driveway, at night. All of a sudden I feel the air of something rushing under my legs and when I looked up, I saw that it was a decent sized possum, and then he scurried off behind the garage.
I was like: "Holy crap!"

It was near your legs? Ugh!
We have decent sized frogs around our house. I'm not a fan, and I got all freaked out when my grandma showed me one that residing in one of the potted plants out front on Saturday morn (it's gone now).
I think I saw a tiny one too. But, frogs aren't able to get rabies, so off topic.
Speaking of rabies, I need to see Old Yeller. I've never seen it but I bet I'll cry.

It was a rabid racoon.
I don't like people harming animals each other but... the person did what needed to be done.

I'd rather see a black bear or a cougar in the daylight than a darned raccoon or possum.
I don't even hesitate when I see a possum or coon in the yard in daylight. The coat, boots, gloves, and baseball bat come out and when I'm done I call animal control.
