Well... great... now I'm afraid to use references because everybody here is going to attack me for "copying." Maybe he shouldn't have won this prize or this contest, but I don't see that he straight up "stole" people's art.
If he did indeed print people's artwork out, trace what he needed, and then claimed it as "all original" then fine, yeah... that's kinda BS. But if he genuinely drew freehand while looking at these other drawings to help him get poses and clothing correct, I don't see anything wrong with that.
I'm sorry, I couldn't just draw Kim off the top of my head sitting like that and know exactly how her body weight would shift and where her arm placement would be, etc. I'd need some kind of general reference to help me out. (although arguably, you could try to make your own poses and just guess at it...).
But the clothing... if he wants to dress them up like Naruto characters, then he has to know what the clothing looks like. I don't see what the issue is with some of this stuff.
I have tons of pictures, photographs, and other stuff that I use as references to help me draw accurately. Whether it be the curve of a leg, or wrinkles in a shirt, or the gears in a watch. All artists use references.
At least, the good ones do.

There's a right way and a wrong way to use reference material. That picture was really just a cut and paste. If all the references were from the source material, I wouldn't have a thing to say, but copying other artists that directly, then taking credit for it, that's dirty pool. Here is, in my opinion, a proper use of references: For Kim's pose, I used this (from ASiT): For Kim's fleece jacket: The final result:

yeah, that's more of what I'm talking about, Argy.
I don't want people seeing your pic there and saying, "You totally copied that!" That's all I'm trying to get at.

There's a fine line I suppose. Referencing screencaps of KP, I see nothing wrong with that. Referencing the original work of other artists on the other hand...

The problem with that guy though, is he didn't do that. I've used other peoples artwork as reference before, but when I draw what they draw it never comes out 100% identical to what the original looked like (I have my own style which shows through). Those are exact copies of existing artwork and that is plagerism. Drakkenfan, I suggest that you send your comparison images with his artwork to a DA mod, people like him give artists a bad name.

You see this why I don't do art. People can easily copyright your work.
Fanfiction, however, if you copy it, people will know really soon.

That is true Drakkenfanboy, I have had one person actually post the first chapter of Bloom and called it his own. It didn't take long for people to notice. However in the instance of this pic there apparently was no freehand. All he did was cut and paste, make a few additions and posted it as his work. Now if you had said that is what he did then maybe it would have not been so bad. His flippant attitude made it worse. But again and I know I sound like a broken record. We are all dealing with copywrited art and characters. We have little to no right to KP other than our own enjoyment. We can only protect our work to a point. I hope this will stand as an object lesson to us all. But I will ask all artist and writers this - if someone asks you for permission to use one or part of your works, please say yes, cooperation and friendship make the KP world a much better place. And I ask those who are doing the asking, if you ask for permission and recieve a yes please for everyone's sake give credit where credit is due. If for some reason you recieve a no, then respect the artist/author and not use the work.
This is the Captain over and out Righthand salute.

There's a fine line I suppose. Referencing screencaps of KP, I see nothing wrong with that. Referencing the original work of other artists on the other hand... not to put too fine a point on it but screen caps and model sheets are also the original work of some other artist, wether they remain nameless to us or not. This particular work looks like a tracing to me rather than a cut and paste or a reference, someone could easily put one face over the other in photoshop and change opacity to see if the lines match up that well or not, because I don't think many people have the ability to draw from reference that closely. Like what Commander Argus was mentioning, in my mind is totally different and I think everyone could agree on that.

Now he just called me a cuss word in a comment below his DA journal which I don't think I'm allowed to write here, but it begins with Ba and ends with Stard. What a pleasant fellow.
