check this out, it will make you all feel much better " Contest Award Revoked -- New Contest Results" "Yesterday we received several messages about the First Prize winner of the Crossover Competition, claiming the artist had copied their work. We were not aware of this until then (it would be impossible to compare every contest submission with every Kim Possible fanart drawing and/or screenshot for rips). However, after reading the complaint and examining the pictures closely, we found not one, but several of these violations had been committed in the single entry. It is one thing for an artist to use other pictures for reference, but in this case the body positions, the expressions, and even the colours were almost completely unaltered from the originals. The artist's immature attitude didn't help matters. He might have gotten a pass if he was apologetic or at least given credit, but when word got around and people pointed out the infractions in comments on his page, the artist mocked them. Therefore, we have stripped the artist of the 1st Prize title, are recalling his award, and are permanently banning him from further competition. We have notified deviantArt, and he may face further sanctions from them as well. The First Prize awards go to the next place winners--*HazuraSinner and ~Charmein. They are already scheduled to receive 6 months subscription, which will be activated soon. Because they have moved up to first place, they are entitled to an additional 6 months' subscription, which will be ordered within a few weeks. Also, ~Celestialfruit has now moved up in rank to become winner of 3rd Prize. This award will be ordered immediately. Thank you to all others who have participated in the contest. I hope you understand that while we will be generous, we will not tolerate cheaters." from kimpossiblefanatics.deviantart.com/journal/10610781/#journal

This particular work looks like a tracing to me rather than a cut and paste or a reference, someone could easily put one face over the other in photoshop and change opacity to see if the lines match up that well or not, because I don't think many people have the ability to draw from reference that closely. Here, check out the Ron and Drakken in these drawings: I did that all from reference. And I don't want to sound arrogant about it, but they are spot on to the designs on the show. Drakkenfan, I suggest that you send your comparison images with his artwork to a DA mod, people like him give artists a bad name. He's not an artist. He's just a d-bag.

Why can't people make their own oroiginal art instead of stealing others. Its much more rewarding!

Well everyone has room for improvement, and those wouldn't be mistaken for tracings, although Drakken's head does look nice. I think those sketches prove my point more than anything else that it's pretty obvious when people trace, compared to simply drawing based on a reference. There's a difference between saying "oh I recognize where that's referenced from" and "Oh I know which fanart/screencap/model sheet that is traced from"

There's a difference between saying "oh I recognize where that's referenced from" and "Oh I know which fanart/screencap/model sheet that is traced from" Ding Ding Ding!! That's exactly what we're arguing, what he did left little to the imagination if you compaired where it came from to the final product. Usually when someone references something there are small variations in the style and the image itself, when it's copied/traced its just that. Now technically if you traced something technically 'you' did the art. But in a courtroom/lawsuit that would never, ever hold water.

If using references was taboo, I'd be in trouble. I need references (especially modelsheets) for drawing characters, and if you ask me to draw, say, an M1A1 Abrams without a picture it will be horrible. (Of course, I've drawn so many steam locomotives that I don't really need references for them anymore...at least not for side views.)
