If using references was taboo, I'd be in trouble. I need references (especially modelsheets) for drawing characters, and if you ask me to draw, say, an M1A1 Abrams without a picture it will be horrible. (Of course, I've drawn so many steam locomotives that I don't really need references for them anymore...at least not for side views.) Okay, draw me a Southern Railway Class M Mikado! Oops...let me clarify...I'm good at drawing generic 4-8-4s from the side. But if you want an SR Class M, I can do that.

Heh, just kidding. I've had a photo of one (SR #4501) hanging over my bed since I was little (the pic was taken in Charlotte circa 1971)

Upon further expection of that oddball fellow's work. There's a LOT ripped off works in his gallery. Right on the front page is sftoon's one Bunny kim that started it all.

Perhaps there's not much to add here, especially now that the matter's been resolved, but I did have to comment after reading all the way through this thread. I'm still in disbelief. This is something I've been over at least a million times at other forums. Yeah, this is fanart, so we *are* dealing with copyrighted characters that don't belong to us. Thus what we seem to have then is an unwritten honor system going on. There are clear differences between using references, giving credit for making copies/manipulations, and outright tracing other people's work and claiming it as your own. Any time I draw-- say, Kim Possible, it's a given fact that she's not my character, but simply my version of a character that belongs to many other talented people and for them I give total credit. If I were to ink/re-ink, color, paste, and/or manipulate someone else's fanart, I'd only do so after gaining permission from the artist and would give them full credit upon displaying it. And hey, if someone wanted permission to use my artwork (outside of monetary gain) I'll be more than happy to grant it, as it works both ways. But the line work in this thing is *way* too close to be reference maerial, yet not exact enough to be merely slapped together through photoshop. I'd say it's obvious that there's been some tracing done (the unconfident, shaky lineart attests to that). . . Sigh. . . I hate dealing with art thieves, I really do. The fact that he acted so ignorant after getting caught is the icing on the cake.

Wow, it's down already. . . but I bet the thumbnail will always exist and I managed to sneak a peek at that. But yeah. . . always weirds me out too when that happens.

Come on people its not like this doesn't happen all the time on the Internet. You've got the guy and he'll probably be banned for this now its time to move on. Just dwelling on the subject won't help anything at all and will only make you more upset. I mean from personal experience I've had people 'steal' stuff from my works without giving me credit be it a fanartist who used one of my jokes and didn't give credit (nice gal just wasn't worth her time apparently) or be it someone stealing a few scenes from one of my stories and writing their own (was actually a pretty good story and I left a positive review just wish I could remember my friend's on-line nickname since he was the one who posted it and even more importantly I wish I could remember the chap's phone number. I haven't talked to him in weeks...).
Anyway my point is that people will take your ideas/works and use them as their own sometimes. It sucks but that's life. If you want to prevent in then as soon as your done drawing you should take the picture/story shred it, shred the remains, burn the remains, mix the ashes with water and bury them in a undisclosed location. Unless you do that then just accept it as part of life and move on. You've caught the guy after all so no more need to make a fuss about this.

Well, that's kinda what's happened. This thread went crazy for a couple of days, they guy got shot down and we moved on. Couple people come in late to the party and make a comment, but for the most part its behind us now. Done deal.

It is always nice to see copycats get busted. I can tell right off the bat for the non believers out there that even the last picture shows, this is CLEARLY a photoshopped or paintshopped image. It is so obvious that it was scary, in fact the first moment I laid my eyes on it I could smell photoshop from a mile away.
When it comes for making images blend in to some extent I got experience as I have been ereasing watermarkings, lightfaults and other unwanted material on photo's prior to printing them. So I know the tools he has used here to make it all blend in nicely, although it was amusing to see such a picture it is clearly a copycat at work.
This problem has been ongoing for quite some time, even in other industries, back for Half-Life there were modellers doing ripoffs and hackjobs (Taking parts of another model and using it on yours) And then we had the worst class, readme hijackers. That is people taking a 3D model, ripping the original readme with the credits out of the archive then adding their own before uploading it as their own.
In this case as I said above, it is nice to see justice being dealt and the matter closed.

Good to read that the copycat has met justice.
Sadly, thanks to the Net, plagerism is quite common. I'm not talking about just people stealing artwork and fics and claiming them as their own. I'm also talking about cheating in school,s and other examples that makes it easier to get away. It's going to be fact of life with the Net, so people has to get use to it even it deeply rankles them.
Every time this subject comes up, I wondered whether my works are already copied and claimed by others. It maybe possible, given the Net is so vast that is hard to determine whether one's art and/or fics have been copied elsewhere. Yet I continue on despite this dread, because I still want to have fun.
BTW, what this guy did was wrong to copy other fans' artworks. Yet if he had simply photoshopped screen shots off the TV show, it would have been okay. It would have been no different than an artist drawing the characters given the characters are not anyone's copyright except Disney's anyway.
