Shego singing a Gretchen Wilson song? I dunno if I've heard "All Jacked Up". I ought to listen to it later.

Okay, I have a question here - What is by definition would make a fic be a song fic? A fic where more than 75% of the fic is just lyrics? Or a fic where lyrics are mentioned, regardless that the lyrics only compromise less than say 5% of the story.
If the former, I agreed that those type of fics are pointless. They not really stories anyway.
The lateral however is different. I placed lyrics of holiday songs in my "Tis the Season" to fit the holiday feeling of the story, but the lyrics only compromise a small percentage of the large volume of words of the story. The songs don't run the story. They are only a small tiny part of the story.

I personally think it's okay if the lyrics are just 5 percent of the story, but if it's like 50 percent, that's a no no.

A song-fic is generally a one-shot story for which the purpose of the story is to tie in in some way to the song itself. Most often, I don't find them very interesting, but I have seen a few I liked on occasion. I wrote a songfic myself, shortly after I started, and the biggest thing for me was tying in a proper story with the words. I'd say it was about 50% words, 50% lyrics. In my case, I was going with Ron's thoughts as he is standing there, about to be married. In my case, I made sure the song itself was secondary to the story itself, which is how Ron himself felt. Check it out, see what you think... www.fanfiction.net/s/2496835/1/

I'll go with Zaratan here. I have done a number of songfics. A couple were quite popular. But there is at least as much narrative as lyrics if not way more. In all of mine everthing that is happening in the fiction is directly related to the lyrics. "Where you are" and my "Little Black Dress" can be said to be songfics as they both have lyrics in them. I like this type as the lyrics add to the story, but are not the main part of the story.

well these are some of my peves... Songfic esp where the characters sing. (shudders) but for the most part I just skim over the song lyrics. Kigo, not my cup of tea, but I'll read M/M slash as long as it's well written... (go fig) Bad deathfic. Stories that have no plot what-so-ever except for seeing how many characters they can pair up together, Mult. Pairings, or using Ron as some sort of sex toy shared amongst the female characters... Ron's parents depicted as abusive bad parents. Stories that are carbon copies of other stories. Stories that start out good, but then the author gets bored with the story and nevers finishes it or rushes to the ending just to get it over with. That or doesn't have a clear plan as to where the story is headed and drags it out. Stories that are too long, and this is not because they are bad stories... it's just that they take alot of time to read/follow... I tend to wait untill the story is finished so then I know that it has an ending instead of a story that is really long and then the author never finishes it. I just don't want to invest my time into something that never gets completed...

Well, I went 50-50, mainly because I tied in the songfic to correspond to the length of the song. You should be able to read each part of the story itself, skipping the lyrics, in time to correspond with the lyrics as the song plays in the background. Of course, reading speed varies, but that's what I tried to do.

I'm not particulary fond of songfics where Kim or Ron begin to sing a song describing their feelings, especially cause its been so over done. In fact I hardly ever write songfics yet I just wrote one and am working on another and I like them so far.
I did something though that I feel is a little different. The one I just completed is called On Your Porch and if fanfiction.net wasn't giving me hassles about uploading, I'd post it but anyway. The fic is based off of the song "On Your Porch" by The Format.
I basically broke the song up into four seperate sections and each section deals with a different time in the life of the K/R family.
In the first verse of the song the guy sings about talking to someone all night, a female I gather and then turning towards the person and telling them that he loved them. I used this as a basis to set up Ron telling Kim about his feelings for her. The song and the fic are actually sort of seperate in a way. First you have the lyrics then the story that pertains to that particular verse.
Right now I'm doing one based off of "Estranged" by Guns N' Roses in much of the same way. Certain verses will pertain to Kim's point of view while others will pertain to Ron's and will be the bases for what happens in that particular part of the story.
Another type of songfic, if you can call it that are ones based of songs but don't necessarily contain the song in them. For example I think that while it probably wouldn't make a good KP story though it could work if done right, a story based off of the songs "Mr. Brightside" and "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine" by the Killers would be interesting. For those of you who do not know the songs, "Mr. Brightside" is about a jealous lover and "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine" is about a guy who kills his best friend. The song seems to be set in two different settings. One is where the guy talks about killing his best friend and the other I see as being a police interrogation room in which he says "there ain't no motive for this crime, Jenny was a friend of mine." I think a story set in a police station where the main character is interrogated by the police for the death of his friend and he tells them that he had no motive, meanwhile we get glimpses into his mind of memories of him killing her.

Kigo, not my cup of tea, but I'll read M/M slash as long as it's well written... (go fig) I don't think it's that strange. I'm not a big fan of M/M slash myself. I've always theorized that many people out there are more open to slash involving the other sex - that is, males are more open to femslash, and vice versa. Sincerely, Allaine

While I read both, the only ones I really enjoy at times are femslash. M/M just never really interests me at all (though I love the way Failte handles Kim's reaction to finding out about Ron, that always makes me laugh). But even then, there's only even a couple K/S stories I have on my favorites, and no other slash pairings set.

I've read two major "kigo" stories all the way through - "Unacceptable Sitch" and one that was a Teen Titans crossover. In both I didn't know it was Kigo going in and let me say, the first was a really good story, though I didn't read any more in that series since in the end I found it didn't interest me.
The second one was fairly good, but right at the end, out of the clear blue it went Kigo for absolutely no reason whatsoever. If felt like I'd been ambushed. It took the whole story and turned it into crap.

^ That's another peeve I have - fanfic writers who don't bother to tell whether the fic is slash or not. I don't like it when the author doesn't give any hint anywhere before I read the story, only to found it's a slash fic when I'm reading.
I don't like it when they do that. I like to be told advance of time so I can choose to read or not.

I highly appreciate the authors who put "Kigo" or summich in their summeries. I'm not going to read it, but I do appreciate it.

Well, I think there are valid arguments on both sides. If you're someone who refuses to read slash, then you're going to feel like you've wasted your time if you get halfway through a story and slash begins to develop.
On the other hand, if you DON'T have a problem with slash, and a story summary identifies itself as such, then you're going to feel like they've given away part of the ending.
As the writer of Unacceptable Sitch, however, I do want to point out that there IS no femslash in that story. Their relationship could best be described as "tenuous friendship" at the end.
Sincerely, Allaine

Yeah, I do not think that Unacceptable Sitch had any slash, except maybe Kim looking at Shego's breasts. Man, Unacceptable Sitch was a darn good fanfic. One of my all time favorites.

That's why it's one of my favs, as well as the rest of your series, because of the way you developed it slowly, rather than rushing it quickly like so many others do.

not saying that there's slash involved when you submit a summary is just plain old bad form.
'nuff said.
