Montreal (Reuters) - Joe Barnes, Kyle Wharton, and Oleg Kvasha are all new faces in Montreal and the three of them couldn't be happier to be be north of the border. Despite their obvious differences, (Wharton a defensman, Barnes young winger, Kvasha a war weary veteran) they all have one thing in common. They had no place in their previous hockey clubs.
Joe Barnes was unwanted in Boston. Barnes is 24 years old, and broke into the PTHL in 2009 where he played 28 games for Islanders. Since then he has never played more than 42 games in a single season and has constantly be shuffled up and down the ladder between the pros and the minor league. "It was clear that I did not fit in," Barnes said after the game against Vancouver, where the Habs tied the Canucks 4-4. "So when I found out during the playoffs last season that I was being moved, I was ecstatic. They couldn't tell me where I was going, but I didn't care. They could have shipped me off to the worst team in the league, and I would rather have be there than in Boston where I was spending my career being the 13th or 14th forward." Barnes couldn't believe it when he found out not only was he going to be playing for the Eastern Conference Champions, but he was guaranteed a starting spot on the 3rd line. "It beats being a healthy scratch half the time," a smiling Joe Barnes joked.
The Canadiens GM just shrugged when asked why they traded for him. "We liked what we saw. Barnes is a big guy who isn't a superstar in any specific area but he can do most everything well. He's a balanced player."
Kyle Wharton had no future in Florida. Wharton, another 24 year old, was merely keeping Yuri Merkulov's spot warm while he developed in the Florida Panthers minor league affiliate. "Once Merkulov was deemed ready to play in the NHL, I was going to be a healthy scratch. Barring an injury to one my former teammates, I would likely not play anymore this season." Wharton had begun to wonder if he was going to spend his life as a 7th defensman or playing for rebuilding teams who just needed warm bodies on the cold ice. Instead he has been getting plenty of ice time in Montreal. "It's amazing. In Florida I was slowly being pushed out the door, but now I actually have a place where I fit in."
Oleg Kvasha an unecessary part of the Pittsburgh Penguins. As a team still rebuilding, there was little room for Kvasha on the Pens. So when the Canadiens announced they were looking for some depth players, Pittsburgh was the first to respond and offered up Kvasha. Impressed with his shot and his size, the Habs GM immediately agreed to bring him on board. "Kvasha has four career hat tricks, all within the last two seasons," the GM commented. "How many other players can say the same? Not even Crosby or Ovechkin can boast that." In fact, Crosby has only had one hat trick since the 2009-2010 season.
"No one is expecting me to post Art Ross winning numbers, but I am expected to help had some scoring punch to the defensive line," Kvasha stated during the press conference after his trade. The addition of Kvasha also helped to make up the GM's mind in regards to trading last season's offensive captain Radek Bonk.
Kvasha and Barnes have been placed on the 3rd line and spend a lot of time playing with Wharton. The trio never had a chance to play together in preseason, but you wouldn't be able to tell it from the way they play together during the games. Barnes has three assists, while Kvasha and Wharton have a goal and an assist each. Not bad for a group averaging a little over 12 minutes a game,
Montreal as a whole is doing fairly well offensively. For the first time ever in their history, Montreal leads the league in goals having lit the lamp 13 times in only 3 games for a 4.33 gpg average. Six players currently are on a point per game pace or better. "That's great," the coach said. "Now if we could just keep the pucks out of our net as well." The Canadiens have allowed 10 goals in 3 games. It will be interesting to see what kind of changes they make to lower their goals against average while trying to keep their goals for average at or around the same pace. ________________________ I guess I haven't copied anything to the clipboard since late last night when I typed up an article for a fantasy hockey league I'm in.
